The American University in Cairo is doing its utmost to be a great environmental steward. At the forefront of the sustainability movement in the region, AUC has launched the Research Institute for Sustainable Environments (formerly the Desert Development Center) to help oversee the university’s impact and promote new initiatives. AUC is currently in the middle of a three-year energy-saving program (adopted back in 2012) aimed at reducing energy consumption university-wide by one-third. As part of this plan, the university retro-commissioned its HVAC system—adjusting target temperatures, reducing hours of service, and installing occupancy sensors and automatic doors to prevent cool air from being released. AUC is also taking aim at carbon emissions. Indeed, in an effort to cut down on both emissions and traffic congestion, the school has adopted a policy referred to as “High Occupancy Parking (HOP).” The HOP program waives the parking fees of individuals who choose to carpool. Another facet that AUC is actively addressing is water consumption and savings, especially important given the location’s arid climate. More specifically, AUC has begun using treated wastewater (a form of recycled water) when irrigating the landscaping around campus. By using treated water, the university helps alleviate problems surrounding domestic water scarcity in the region. AUC’s wastewater use also takes further aim at carbon emissions because 42 percent less energy is needed to pump, process and deliver treated wastewater than is required when relying on domestic water. With all these initiatives (and more!), it’s easy to see that AUC is serious about going green!
