Academics

Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, swears by the Centre Commitment: all students will study abroad, have a research opportunity or internship, and graduate within four years, or else they’re given an additional year at the college tuition-free. At this liberal arts school, about a quarter of students double-major, choosing from more than fifty majors, minors, and pre-professional programs. The school prides itself on “community-based learning initiatives through various service groups” and partnerships with community organizations, and there are “ample internship and career opportunities” as well as “a high level of student engagement in professor research.” There is also the unique CentreTerm, which is a three-week period in January during which students can take classes abroad, complete internships or research, or take immersive courses that go beyond traditional lectures in order to expand one’s knowledge and “engage in new and interesting, and often more applicable, curriculum.”

“There is no greater support here than from the professors,” who have an “intentionality in getting to know and teach students.” They “make it really easy to get excited about learning” because “they really aren’t here in Danville for any reason other than they love to teach and are incredibly good at it.” Most of the faculty “maintain a difficult class curriculum and work load” but “are usually clear about what they are expecting from their students” and “offer office hours far beyond the required amount.” The “academics here are unparalleled,” and while Centre “is a hard school … it is not competitive among students.” As one student sums it up: “Your friends and classmates are there to support you.”

Student Body

“A lot of students come from Kentucky,” and with more than 90 percent of the “very studious and mostly friendly” Centre students receiving some form of financial aid, this group comes from “diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.” There is “a mindset of open communication and discussion which is facilitated in friend groups,” which “makes the learning environment very collaborative.” And since most students study abroad, “we also gain a diversity of perspectives from our experiences around the world.” The Centre community—both on campus and through the alumni network—“is second to none,” and since students run into each other all the time, these “frequent, often accidental, interactions strengthen the community atmosphere of Centre.”

Campus Life

At Centre, 98 percent of students live on campus, so most “have some level of face recognition if not name recognition with each other.” Students “are passionate about things they do,” and during the week, “people are busy with homework, meetings for clubs/organizations, or sports practice.” Come the weekend, “many people go out or find something fun to do [such as] midnight movies [or] hanging out with friends,” and many “will go out to the fraternity parties or an event organized by the Student Activities Council.” Greek life is a popular option, but “it is also very easy to be involved and have a great group of friends without it.” Students “tend to eat off campus on the weekend,” and will also go “bowling, play games outside, [play] card games, or just hang out in the campus center.”

Local Accommodations
There are several charming bed-and-breakfasts operating in the historic homes that line Danville's older streets. The best way to inquire about rooms in these homes is to call the Campus Visit Coordinator through the admissions office. We recommend a beautifully restored pre-Civil War home, the Twin Hollies (406 Maple Ave.; 859-236-8954), a short one-and-a-half blocks from campus, and the Elmwood Inn (205 E. 4th St., Perryville; 859-332-2400) on the banks of the Chaplin River, 10 minutes from Centre. The Elmwood, an 1842 Greek Revival house listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has 2 rooms, and the moderate price includes a full breakfast with homemade muffins. Less expensive accommodations can be found within 5 miles of the school at the Hampton Inn & Suites or the new Holiday Inn Express. The Bright Leaf Resort and Motel (U.S. Rte. 127 S., 1742 Danville Rd., Harrodsburg; 859-734-5481), about 5 miles from campus, is an inexpensive resort-type facility with a health club, outdoor pool, fishing lakes, and golf course. Special golf packages are available.
