Middle Tennessee State University is a large public institution established in 1911 as a teacher training college. Over the years MTSU has become a dominant entity in higher education in the Southeast.
With over 130,000 alumni, MTSU is the largest contributor to the workforce in middle Tennessee. Currently, one college degree-holder in five in the greater Nashville area graduated from Middle Tennessee State University.
With a student/faculty ratio of 17:1, students receive a great deal of personal attention from their professors. Students may choose from more than 180 undergraduate programs of study and over 140 graduate programs. Our student body consists of a remarkably diverse population with members from almost every state and 77 foreign countries, where we've established long-term relationships with many other universities. As a state-supported university, our students receive an excellent education for a fraction of the cost when compared to comparable schools across the country.

Middle Tennessee State University is comprised of eight undergraduate colleges as well as a College of Graduate Studies and offers more than 320 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. It boasts a diverse portfolio of programs providing a wide-ranging array of disciplines from which to choose, including some that are not available from other universities.
MTSU is renowned for its Aerospace program, Concrete Industry Management, Recording Industry, and numerous other programs that have gained national and international recognition for excellence. Many of our programs incorporate one or more experiential learning components which allow our students to gain practical real-world experience to build upon the base of superior knowledge and theory earned in the classroom. Our undergraduate students have an opportunity to engage in a strong research program at levels usually reserved for graduate students at most universities. Our faculty of nearly 1,000 professional educators consists of many individuals with business and industry experience directly related to their specialty.

At Middle Tennessee State University, 68% of full-time undergraduate students receive some kind of need-based financial aid. New incoming freshmen students meeting certain ACT and GPA minimums are eligible for guaranteed academic scholarships if they complete their applications by Dec. 1 of each year. These scholarships start at a 23 ACT and range from $2,000 per year to $5,000 per year depending upon the score. These scholarships are "stackable" and may be combined with other scholarships.
MTSU also has a Regional Scholars Program which provides students in the surrounding contiguous states the ability to come to MTSU a reduced rate. Middle Tennessee State University is on a 515-acre campus located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, just 35 miles from downtown Nashville, in the heart of one of the fastest-growing and most energetic regions of the country. Our students get the best of both worlds—the resources of a large public university coupled with the personalized student services that you would expect at a small private college. In addition, we also have a 500-acre agricultural lab located just minutes from the primary campus for those studying agriculture and related disciplines. There are numerous opportunities for recreation and entertainment when students want to take a break from their studies. Outdoor activities in this region abound in a beautiful and tranquil setting.
The campus and facilities at MTSU are an undiscovered gem to those who may have never visited here. With over $1 billion dollars invested in new and remodeled infrastructure in the past 10 years, our students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and resources that are often unavailable at other schools. For example, our 250,000-square-foot Science Building, the centerpiece of the $147 million Science Corridor of Innovation, marked the largest project on a higher education campus approved by the state of Tennessee. We also have built a new College of Education building and a 211,000-square-foot Student Union; have a $39 million College of Behavioral and Health Sciences building opening in Fall 2020 to house our Psychology, Criminal Justice Administration, and Social Work programs and labs; and will start construction soon on a School of Concrete and Construction Management building.
Campus Facilities & Equipment
In 2012, MTSU built the new $65 million, 211,000-square-foot Student Union which houses multiple eateries, the campus bookstore, game rooms, computer labs, a movie theater, conference and seminar rooms, student programming offices, and more. It is the largest of the three student union buildings on campus.
The new Science Building opened in 2014 with more than 250,000 square feet for teaching, faculty and student laboratory research, and collaborative learning. This building is the biggest improvement ever for science education and research at MTSU and for the more than 13,000 students who enroll annually in biology, chemistry, and other science courses. It contains more than 50 separate laboratories for educational use.
MTSU is home to four libraries which provide information, resources, and instructional services to meet the needs of students, faculty, staff, and researchers. They are the James E. Walker Library, Albert Gore Research Center, Center of Popular Music, and Women's Studies Library.
Off-Campus Opportunities
MTSU offers an extensive study abroad program which allows our students to gain new cultural experiences to extend and enhance their on-campus learning. Students often are able to develop customized programs to fit their specific needs and interests.
For six years, our Video and Film Production, Photography, and Audio Production majors have been actively involved in the production of the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival which takes place annually on 700 acres in Manchester, Tennessee, about 30 minutes south of our main campus. "Our partnership with Bonnaroo has opened up so many opportunities for our students, and we're now seeing those first students in the program return as professionals," former Media and Entertainment Dean Ken Paulson said. "It's a reminder to all of us that classrooms shouldn't be contained by four walls." This is not a theory class. "MTSU's partnership with Bonnaroo gives our students an amazing hands-on opportunity to engage the world with all of the rich media that we teach," said Media Arts Chair Billy Pittard.
MTSU has been involved with Nashville Fashion Week (NFW) since its inception. As NFW has grown to the third-largest fashion week event in the country, our relationship and the opportunities for our students to gain excellent experience and build professional relationships within the fashion community where many have now found their careers has increased as well. For the 10th-year anniversary, with the help of the NFW executives, MTSU is expanding its partnerships and will involve a multitude of programs including Fashion Merchandising, Journalism, Interactive Media, Photography, and Tourism and Hospitality Management (which includes an emphasis in event planning).
Many of our other programs provide outstanding opportunities for fieldwork both domestically and internationally.

“The campus is big” but feels like a “comfortable and home-like school” environment where people “sit on the quad by the library and talk with their friends, play music, and skateboard.” This type of campus takes advantage of the other outdoor areas of campus too, and students like to “hang hammocks on trees to sit and read and study.” One student comments, “There are also many different parks and greenways that we enjoy visiting.” For on-campus events, the school is always offering things “like art classes, study groups, or simply a movie showing.” Those looking to spend a little time elsewhere, though, will turn to nearby Murfreesboro, where they can hang out at the “plethora of restaurants and bars.” Nashville isn’t far, either, and students will often “go out to … clubs or arcades” there on weekends. Overall, students find themselves to be quite busy, but the good kind of busy—as one student puts it: “Despite how busy I am, I am happy doing it.”
