Academics

Millikin University is a “small campus with a big campus vibe” thanks to a department-wide performance learning approach that “gives you firsthand knowledge and experience that is absolutely vital in preparing for your future.” Students can choose from a long list of areas of study, including “excellent music and business programs” along with beloved nursing, theater, and education departments. After doing so, they’ll put into practice “every theory [learned] in class” through internships and other field experience. These hands-on opportunities “allow students to decide quickly if the major they are in is the right fit for them.” As some students put it, “you learn twice as much through trial and error.” Between this and the opportunity to “make connections with future employers well before graduation,” students get a lot of relevant professional experience. As an added bonus, the faculty are “dedicated to the growth and success of each individual student in the class,” creating a supportive environment where you feel “comfortable to ask them for help when needed.”

Student Body

On the whole, Millikin students are “cultured, diverse, and friendly.” Individually, they “come from all walks of life” and hold a “wide range of personalities, majors, and attributes that make them all unique.” Not only does this lead to an “encouraging environment for learning and creating,” it also makes it “very easy to [form] meaningful relationships” because attendees are “extremely open-minded.” As such, “the campus is LGBTQ+ friendly” and “Millikin is a safe place to be whoever you really are.” One student sums it up by saying, “I do not know how we got so many nice people in one place.” Clearly that’s not a complaint, though, and another goes on to state, “I love the different, homey feel I get when I’m here and around friends.”

Campus Life

At Millikin, “most people fill their days with classes and studying, either individually or with a group.” And while many students commute to school, it still seems that many choose to “hang out on campus and become involved.” Because of that, “there is always a bustling energy” around the facilities, and students can be found “gathering at popular locations like the new Commons building.” Additionally, “everyone is generally active with extracurricular activities,” including athletics, clubs, Greek life, or band. As for those athletics, some note that it feels the school’s population “is over half athletes,” which makes attending sporting events and working out quite popular. Additionally, “our theatre and music majors are always dancing and singing throughout campus” and “create lots of events for students to attend at the local pizza shop.” Outside of official organizations, you can still find “tons of things around campus to do, like games, movies, and crafts.” When day turns to night, students enjoy “going out to the downtown area or to the popular local bar,” and on the weekends, “there are parties to choose from nine times out of ten,” according to one student.
