Academics

Massachusetts’ Mount Holyoke College is a small women’s-only research liberal arts school that stresses interdisciplinary study, offering more than fifty departmental and interdepartmental majors (30 percent of all majors are cross-departmental). Students even have the option to design their own major. As a member of the Five Colleges Consortium, students here are also able to take advantage of the courses and resources of four nearby schools: Amherst College, Hampshire College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. There’s “a lot of flexibility” and the academic rigor is “challenging but encourages learning.” One student says, “I feel like I’m pushed to be a smarter person here.” With such resources as “a Makerspace lab, archives, and an art museum, [students] are always using campus resources to enhance … learning beyond the classroom.”

Professors at Mount Holyoke are “wonderful scholars and wonderful people” who are “caring and receptive to concerns” and “incredibly accessible and helpful in and out of office hours.” Courses offer “hands-on lab experience, real-world scenarios outside of the classroom, and creative teaching exercises,” and when not on field visits, students take part in “a vibrant, excited classroom experience that inspires students to go above and beyond.” Mount Holyoke “is the true definition of a liberal arts experience,” and many professors “are careful to set up the room so that the seating lends itself to open discussion and thought.” This makes for classes that are “intimate and intersectional with professors who prioritize their students above all else.”

Student Body

This is a “very intellectually driven” group that still manages to be “continually supportive of other students” and is “incredibly open-minded and accepting.” The environment at Mount Holyoke “[makes] it clear that being an institution full of bright, ambitious thinkers does not mean that this environment has to be a cutthroat one.” There is a “large international population as well as LGBTQ presence” (Mount Holyoke “is easily one of the best colleges out there for trans, non-binary, and gender nonconforming folks”) and the school is “very successful in embracing diversity in many contexts.” Thanks to the makeup of the student body, students here are “exposed to different cultures and viewpoints,” are “very much dedicated to sustainability,” and “love debates and learning new things.” “Being unique and quirky is welcomed, if not encouraged,” and most everyone is “very liberal” and values “relaxation and engagement with the world.” Most here join a “wide variety of clubs” but still make time “to join … student government meetings or local political protests.”

Campus Life

Weekday life is all about the books and staying “very busy with club activities,” but many people spend their non-classroom time “in the student center, the art facilities, and in common rooms.” There is a “large on-campus culture” and most here “are content to stay on campus and attend cultural events and parties,” though students will “frequently go to the Village Commons, which are right across the street from the college.” Most simply like to “spend a long time at meals, just chatting with friends” or in the campus pub. When South Hadley can’t do the trick, they’ll go to the “neighboring towns of Amherst and Northampton for food and shopping” since the local buses “[make] travel to these towns easy and cheap.” When the weather allows, people take part in club outing events such as “trips to the rock gym [and] trips to Boston or New York City.” Others generally “just enjoy the sunshine or go apple picking in the fall or find somewhere to go for a hike.”
