Sustainability
An AASHE Gold Star school, NMSU takes a wide-ranging approach to campus sustainability, engaging campus operations, curriculum and research. The examples of this commitment are myriad: local sourcing where available in campus dining venues, twenty-six academic departments offering sustainability-focused classes and programs, fish wildlife and conservation ecology, and agricultural economics and business. In addition, recognizing its position as primarily a commuter campus, NMSU has established itself as a Bicycle Friendly University (BFU), reduced its campus fleet fuel consumption by 54 percent, provided a free shuttle service for students, and partnered with the City of Las Cruces to offer free public transit to students with valid ID. Students, too, are heavily engaged with promoting campus sustainability in co-curricular groups, including the Environmental Science Student Organization, the Organization of Aggie Students Inspiring Sustainability, and Take Back the Tap NMSU, which fights plastic water bottle consumption. NMSU’s waste-diversion and reduction measures are impressively far reaching: the university has placed in the national top five in the RecycleMania competition since 2010, reduced paper consumption by making course schedules electronically available and printers’ default settings double-sided, instituted co-mingled recycling for ease of participation, and offered free hazardous waste pickup and toner recycling. Students take pride in promoting sustainability past their educational years, with many taking NMSU’s Green Pledge to consider the environmental impact of any post-graduation job they take, and wearing a green ribbon on their graduation gowns.
