SCAD is committed to the pursuit of excellence and welcomes applicants from the United States and abroad who have the same high standards. SCAD maintains selective admission policies, accounting for a student body that is enthusiastic about the programs of study and capable of advancing rapidly. Applicants who meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements are not guaranteed admission. New students may enter fall (September), winter (January), spring (March) or summer (June), although most students begin in September. Summer course offerings may be limited. Online applications are preferred and are available at scad.edu/apply. Applicants also may download, complete and send the application with fee to the appropriate mailing address. Admission is selective and early application is encouraged. Applications for admission are accepted at any time of year and must be received at least 30 days prior to the intended quarter of entry. Students needing a visa are encouraged to apply for admission at least 90 days prior to the intended quarter of entry.

All admitted students are automatically considered for institutional scholarships. These funds are limited and are awarded to the earliest qualifiers based on materials submitted for review. All students are encouraged to submit supplementary materials to enhance their application for admission and for scholarship consideration. As soon as all application materials are received, the Admission Review Committee considers the applicant's qualifications and renders an admission decision. The applicant is notified immediately.

Academic Programs

All undergraduate programs at SCAD begin with a core curriculum of foundation studies and general education courses to instill fundamental knowledge and teach skills necessary for success at SCAD. Foundation studies in studio arts build visual, conceptual and creative abilities, while general education courses in liberal arts develop critical thinking skills by providing an intellectual foundation and breadth of knowledge for lifelong learning. SCAD provides students the flexibility to pursue their interests while gaining knowledge and expertise in a specific discipline. In addition, students can broaden their education and career preparation through a variety of elective subjects or by completing a double major or minor.

Graduate programs build on current levels of knowledge and achievement to help students reach personal and professional goals, advance understanding and skills in art and design, and assume leadership roles. Through peer critiques and seminar discussions, students evaluate their own work through a self-critical perspective and analyze and explore old and new knowledge and skills in their fields. The graduate experience culminates in student teaching, internships and/or in a thesis or final project. Graduate students emerge from their studies at SCAD with a highly evolved theoretical and practical understanding of their fields.

The Savannah College of Art and Design specializes in “practical applications” of fine arts education and preparing students with “the connections, resources, and opportunities” they need to find job placement after graduation. The College is “always bringing in companies” which “open doors,” and students have strong connections with alumni. Unique collaborations come out of these connections with industry contacts, such as the Collaborative Learning Center, “where multidisciplinary teams of students come together under the guidance of a professor to develop a product, campaign, or solution of a problem for a real world company.” Other real-world work collaborations include working with “several major festivals like the Savannah Film Festival,” which offer bonus opportunities for networking. “I have been offered jobs solely because I have SCAD on my resume,” says one student. Another says, “The networking is incredible. I’ve had my portfolio reviewed by people at the top of my industry.” Students crow over the school’s “quality, professional equipment and facilities” and “up-to-date technology.” Each and every program has a “dedicated staff, beautiful buildings and resources, large-scale events, and a passionate student body,” which creates an immersive experience that offers “authentic interactions with alumni and real-world people.” Students point to the “dynamic range” of majors and programs, including Industrial Design and Interior Design, and “rare” offerings such as the UX Design and Service Design. The professors are “remarkable.” They have “relevant work-force experience and a passion for instilling passion in students.” Faculty “respects students and are respected right back.” Says one student: “I am good friends—lifelong friends—with my professors.”

Tuition, Room, Board and Fees

For 2011-2012, full-time undergraduate tuition is US$30,510; full-time graduate tuition is US$30,960. The housing fee for the academic year ranges from US$7,785 for dormitory style and US$8,835 for apartment style. Basic meal plan rate is $1,490 per quarter.

There is a one-time enrollment fee of $500, and a nonrefundable housing reservation fee of $250 for students who sign up for SCAD housing. SCAD offers meritand need-based scholarships, as well as federal and state financial aid. About 90 percent of SCAD students receive some form of financial assistance. Approximately USD $20 million in institutional scholarships is awarded annually to the incoming class.

Life at SCAD is active and engaging within and beyond the classroom. The SCAD experience includes programs and activities that promote student interaction, leadership, and community service, and encourage a healthy lifestyle. With more than 70 student organizations, SCAD students have many opportunities to meet others who share common interests-from swing dancing to blacksmithing.

SCAD sponsors student groups affiliated with professional organizations as well as clubs related to academic programs. Leadership development opportunities are promoted through all student organizations including the Student Activities Council and United Student Forum.

SCAD libraries are focal points for inspiration, information, study and research. Collections vary and are targeted to the needs of the SCAD community. At each location, the library contributes to every aspect of academic and intellectual life by providing a broad range of collections and services, including access to digital images, online databases, media, course reserves, archival materials and personalized research instruction.

SCAD galleries and exhibitions in Savannah, Atlanta, Hong Kong and Lacoste showcase the work of students, alumni, faculty and other distinguished and emerging artists.

The SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah is an integral part of the SCAD educational experience. The museum engages in education, exhibitions, research, collection care and programming. Among its significant collection of 4,500 objects, the museum has 17thto 19th-century British and American works, including paintings by van Dyck, Hogarth and Gainsborough, and prints by Hogarth, Goya and Renoir; 20th-century works by Picasso and de Kooning; a major African-American collection with iconic works by Bearden and Lawrence; 19thand 20th-century photography; and designer costumes by Chanel and Christian Dior. A 60,000-square-foot expansion opens in Fall 2011, adding galleries, classrooms, a cafe and a theater to the museum complex.

SCAD students are “incredibly unique” and “eccentric” artists dedicated to “pushing their work into new, exciting forms.” This creates an “environment of constant exploration and creation” among an “open and accepting community.” As a group, SCAD students tend to be “liberal, innovated, passionate, and motivated.” Students take pride in all of the hard work they put into the short quarter system. Students mention touring other schools and finding the “quality of work to blow theirs out of the water.” Students note that this isn’t just—or even mostly—about recruiting talent, but rather it is indicative of SCAD “pushing” students with “intense workloads that trains us to not settle for average ideas.” Says one student: “I would say that my peers are very creative and critical. SCAD definitely trains students to engage in detailed critiques of theirs and others’ work.” Students come from all over the world to attend SCAD, and “unite to foster creative thinking and innovation through their work, as well as share ideas.” As a whole, students are “very supportive of each other and their work.” International students feel that their “needs are taken into consideration” and appreciate the “culturally diverse” classrooms. Students generally feel that “there’s great integration between U.S. students and international students.” “You can really pick up on your peer’s talents,” a student says. And this being an art school, you can’t overlook the benefits of the student body being “quite a stylish bunch.”

SCAD offers distinctive yet complementary locations, so students can choose the environment that best suits their lifestyle and interests. Students may study for one quarter or longer at any other location through which their degree program is offered.

In the heart of Midtown Atlanta, nearly 2,000 SCAD students thrive in the midst of Fortune 500 companies, leading fine art and design organizations, and nonprofits.

Within the venerable walls of the historic former North Kowloon Magistracy Building, SCAD brings prestigious U.S. art and design education and professional career preparation to Hong Kong, a sophisticated international city on the southeastern coast of China.

SCAD Lacoste is a residential study abroad location in the South of France, offering immersion in the history and culture of Provence. Course offerings vary each quarter and offer students an opportunity to pursue intensive study in coursework designed to take advantage of the cultural landscape of Lacoste.

SCAD's flagship location in Savannah offers a unique university experience in a charming historic environment near the beautiful beaches of the coastal South. About 70 SCAD facilities, encompassing more than 2 million square feet, are woven into the fabric of one of the largest and most renowned national Historic Landmark districts in the United States.

The SCAD eLearning environment encompasses an online global community where students learn from SCAD faculty and one another, participating in critiques, meetings and collaborative projects. Students complete undergraduate and graduate degree requirements online or in combination with on-site courses.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

In every department and program, SCAD students work with advanced, professional-level technology, equipment and resources. For example, SCAD is a Digidesign Certified Pro School for sound design and students can become Pro Tools certified before graduating. Illustration students create work using Wacom Cintiq displays.

Students of the building arts use the latest electronic design software including Bentley MicroStation V8, 3D Studio VIZ, SURFCAM AutoCAD, Autodesk Maya and Revit. Fibers students work with Compu-dobby looms, an electronic Jacquard loom and a Mimaki textile printer. The advanced technology labs for furniture and industrial design students include computer numerically controlled equipment for rapid prototyping and production as well as a large envelope five-axis CNC router and laser cutters. Comptuer resources include SolidWorks and Rhino 3-D. Seven 3-D printers allow students to print ABS and polycarbonate 3-D models of their computer-generated designs.

Photography students work in both digital and film/chemistry labs equipped with Macintosh computers, Adobe CS5 software, Imacon scanners and wide-format inkjet printers. Students can expose and process RA-4 photographic materials using a Durst Theta printer in Atlanta and an Epsilon printer in Savannah.

Metals and jewelry students explore a wide range of technology in facilities for precision casting, finishing, enameling, laser welding, lapidary, anodizing, CAD/CAM, forming and stone setting processes. Resources include a laser welder and microscope system, a Stratasys Dimension SST 1200 printer for ABS plastic, two Solidscape T66 wax printers, and two Roland JWX-10 milling machines. Advanced modeling tools include SensAble pens with Claytools software. Accessory design students use specialized equipment such as men's and women's shoe lasts, a shoe finishing machine and cylinder industrial sewing machines. Industry-standard Lectra Romans CAD software is used for designing bags and shoes. Fashion students use industry-standard dress forms, cutting tables, professional sewing machines and specialty finishing equipment. Digital labs offer an Infinity Plus plotter for patternmaking and a Mimaki textile printer, as well as software including Kaledo, Vision Fashion Studio, Gerber Suite, Lectra U4ia and Virtual Fashion Pro.

Film and digital media students work with equipment found at major production and postproduction facilities, and use digital technology, nonlinear editing systems, digital audio workstations and comprehensive labs for screenwriting, scheduling and budgeting. Production facilities and equipment include Steadicam EFP, Super Panther and Fisher dollies, chroma key/green studio and sound stage. Students have access to high-end Avid Media Composer Nitris DX and Symphony Nitris DX editing suites. Cameras include Red One digital 4k cameras, Panavision Panaflex G2 cameras, Ariflex 416 and 35 mm Ariflex and 35 mm MovieCam.

While campus life is focused mostly on work, the school is well integrated into the city, with “SCAD buildings all over Savannah,” and “you can work in any of them.” Life in Savannah offers tons of events, such as Art March, Taste Of Savannah, and the farmers market that happens around the city. There’s “great nightlife,” as well, with restaurants and a healthy bar scene. For fun in the sun, Tybee Beach is just a twenty-minute drive away. There’s also Forsyth Park, where groups of students often gather to relax or work on projects. There is “a lot of time spent doing homework, working on projects and collaborative projects across majors,” but students say the “work is meaningful” and often tied to what they are “passionate about.” Yes, students work hard at SCAD, but there are good options for de-stressing, including a “fitness facility,” “occasional parties,” even though “most people just go downtown,” and “weekend road trips to surrounding states.”
