Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU), chartered in 1869, is a comprehensive, state-supported institution with nationally and internationally recognized instructional, research and service programs. SIU is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. SIU offers more than 200 undergraduate majors, minors and specializations; three associate degree programs; 95 baccalaureate degree programs; 80 master's degree programs; 34 doctoral programs; and professional degrees in law and medicine. SIU is a multicampus university that includes the Carbondale campus as well as the SIU School of Medicine at Springfield.
During the 2016 academic year, SIU's enrollment was 15,987, which included 12,182 undergraduate students, 3,183 graduate students and 622 professional students. The average age of undergraduates is 23.2. International students account for 8.5 percent of SIU's total enrollment. Of U.S. undergraduate students, 17.19 percent are African-American, 0.2 percent are American Indian/Alaskan, 1.8 percent are Asian or Pacific Islander and 8.8 percent are Hispanic.
Students who are ready to start college but not ready to commit to a specific major can enroll in SIU's Exploratory Student-Undeclared (EXPU) program. Advisers and career counselors help these students plan their education and careers.

Freshman applicants whose ACT composite score is at or above 23 (SAT score at or above 1070) and whose high school grade point average at or above 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) are admitted to the university. Applicants also can be admitted with an ACT composite score at or above 18 (SAT score at or above 870) and a high school GPA at or above 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). All other applicants who meet the course subject pattern requirements will undergo a holistic review to determine potential admissibility. Admission of students who do not meet automatic admission requirements may be subject to conditions. Freshman applicants must meet course pattern requirements: four years of English, three years of mathematics, three years of laboratory science, three years of social science and two years of electives.
Transfer applicants must have an overall grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, based on work attempted at all institutions and calculated by SIU grading policies. Transfer applicants must also be eligible to continue at the last institution attended. Some programs have higher admission requirements or require additional screening for admission. SIU's Continuing Education and Outreach auxiliary service provides nonacademic support services for SIU's Carbondale campus. Its noncredit classes, workshops and conference, as well as its contractual services program, offers the university's resources to a variety of groups and individuals both on and off campus. Continuing Education and Outreach provides specialized educational services to groups, organizations, governmental agencies and businesses on a cost-recovery basis. Faculty members are dedicated to excellence in teaching and to their advancement of knowledge in a wide variety of disciplines and professions. Many faculty members are well-known nationally and internationally for their varied research contributions. The student-faculty ratio is 14.52:1. There are 1,130 full-time and 224 part-time instructional faculty members.

The university offers two Associate in Applied Science degree programs--aviation flight and physical therapist assistant--at the College of Applied Sciences and Arts.
The College of Applied Sciences and Arts offers bachelor's degree programs in architectural studies; automotive technology; aviation management; aviation technologies; dental hygiene; electronic systems technologies; fashion design and merchandising; public safety management (off-campus only); health care management; information systems technologies; interior design; mortuary science and funeral service; radiologic sciences; and technical resource management.
The College of Agricultural Sciences offers bachelor's degree programs in agribusiness economics; agricultural systems; animal science; crop, soil and environmental management; forestry; horticulture; hospitality and tourism administration; and human nutrition and dietetics.
The College of Business offers bachelor's degree programs in accounting; business and administration; business economics; finance; management; and marketing.
The College of Education and Human Services offers bachelor's degree programs in almost two dozen undergraduate programs, many in conjunction with other colleges on campus. Tuition, Room, Board and Fees
Tuition and fee charges for the 2017-18 academic year (fall and spring) for students enrolled in 15 or more semester hours were $13,932 for Illinois residents and out-of-state domestic residents, and $28,107 international students. Room and board totaled $10,622. (All costs are subject to change.) The cost of books and school supplies varies among programs. The average cost is $1,100 per academic year.
Financial Aid
More than $293 million in financial aid was distributed to 17,453 SIU students in fiscal year 2015-16 through federal, state and institutionally funded financial aid programs.
To apply for financial aid at SIU, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applications that are filed before April 1 receive priority consideration for campus-based aid. The FAFSA can be completed electronically at the U.S. Department of Education's website (fafsa.ed.gov). When completing the FAFSA, students should list Southern Illinois University Carbondale (Federal School Code 001758) as a school of choice.
SIU has one of the largest student employment programs in the country, with about 4,000 students employed each year in a wide variety of job classifications.

SIU intercollegiate sports teams compete at the NCAA Division I level (football is Division I-FCS). Conference affiliations include the Missouri Valley Conference and the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Intercollegiate sports teams include men's and women's basketball, cross-country, diving, golf, swimming, and track and field; men's baseball and football; and women's softball and volleyball. The campus has various playing fields, several tennis courts, and a campus lake with a beach and boat dock. SIU's Student Recreation Center offers an Olympic-size pool; indoor tracks; handball/racquetball and squash courts; a climbing wall; weight rooms; basketball, volleyball and tennis courts; outdoor equipment rental; an aerobic area; wallyball; martial arts; and dance and cardio studios.
The Student Center is one of the largest in the United States without a hotel. It holds a bookstore, several restaurants, a craft shop, facilities for bowling and billiards, headquarters for more than 275 student organizations and the student government office, four ballrooms and an auditorium.

Carbondale is a city of 26,000 located six hours south of Chicago, two hours southeast of St. Louis and three hours north of Nashville, Tennessee. Four large recreational lakes, two great rivers (the Mississippi and the Ohio) and the 270,000-acre Shawnee National Forest are within reach of the campus. The mid-South climate is ideal for year-round outdoor activities.

In addition to the 2.6 million volumes, 3.6 million microfilms and more than 43,000 current periodicals and serials available in Morris Library, students and faculty members have access to more than 200,000 e-books. More details are available online at lib.siu.edu.
Students learn and practice in the Transportation Education Center based at the Southern Illinois Airport, outdoor laboratories, the student-run Daily Egyptian newspaper, WSIU-TV, WSIU-FM, art and natural history museums, a literary magazine, McLeod Theater, Memorial Hospital, a vivarium, plant biology greenhouses, University Farms and Touch of Nature Environmental Center.
All single students under the age of 21 not residing with their parents or legal guardians, and with fewer than 26 credit hours earned after high school, are required to live in university-owned and operated residence halls. SIU offers four on-campus residential areas for single students, each with a dining hall, post office and laundry facilities. Learning Resource Centers, available on both sides of campus, offer writing centers, computer labs and student lounges. University Housing Residence Hall Dining provides all-you-care-to-eat meals and late-night dining. Residence Hall Dining offers a variety of menus, vegetarian and light entrees, display cooking and a full-time dietitian to help students with special dietary needs. Apartment housing is available for sophomore-, junior and senior-level undergraduates, graduate students and students with families.
Off-Campus Opportunities
Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to serving statewide, national and international needs. This commitment is reflected in SIU Extended Campus, which offers educational opportunities located off campus. SIU Extended Campus is present at 20 military installations and 17 nonmilitary locations across 14 states, offering 12 online degree programs, 12 off-campus programs and five military programs.
Off-campus credit programs are designed to meet the educational needs of adults wishing to pursue a degree but who are unable to travel to the Carbondale campus. Faculty members who teach off-campus courses travel to distant sites to teach SIU courses.
All credit courses offered through these programs carry full SIU academic credit and are taught by faculty members appointed by the academic departments of the university. Additional information can be found online at extendedcampus.siu.edu.
