At Southwestern University, students learn how to discover, collaborate, adapt, and problem-solve through a breakthrough liberal arts curriculum. These lifelong skills form the foundation of innovation and positive change.
The world is changing—and at an accelerating pace. In a 21st-century career, you will be required to advance the frontiers of knowledge, adapt quickly to change, problem-solve new and complex challenges, and anticipate what's next. At Southwestern University, we've designed an experience that prepares you for these new realities.
Combining our breakthrough curriculum with real-world opportunities, SU will equip you with the skills required to create new ideas, adapt, collaborate, and solve problems from multiple perspectives. These skills represent a broader, more relevant education for the tomorrow that awaits you. And employers and top graduate programs seek these crucial skills: Southwestern is the only school in Texas included on the list of "Best Schools for Making an Impact", ranking #3 nationally.
Located in scenic Georgetown just 25 miles north of Austin, Southwestern was the first institution of higher education in Texas and is one of the state's top liberal arts and sciences colleges. Our curriculum incorporates the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, and natural sciences. Our 26 academic departments range from biochemistry and business to foreign languages and computer science. In addition, SU offers seven pre-professional pathways, including pre-engineering, pre-law, and pre-medicine, with acceptance rates into graduate programs significantly higher than the national average.
Complementing our model of inquiry-based learning, SU students participate in transformative experiences such as study abroad, community-engaged learning, internships, and faculty-mentored research projects. The majority of SU students live on campus and are actively involved in one or more of our 100 student organizations. Students are civic-minded and volunteered more than 13,500 service hours in the community in 2017–18. Athletically, the Pirates compete in 20 different varsity sports at the NCAA Division III level, with many more involved in club or intramural sports.
"Southwestern is a place and time of personal growth and joint endeavor. The first moment I walked onto this campus as a prospective student, I knew Southwestern was home. It was so real, so genuine." –Katherine Tanner '13
