Academics

University of Mary of Washington offers a “sense of community” and tons of “school spirit.” Students describe it as a “great liberal arts school with small class sizes.” And the university itself truly excels at providing students with the “strategies and tools necessary to think critically and succeed in the workforce.” It’s also important to mention that “undergraduate research opportunities” abound. Perhaps what students here value most is the level of communication they have with their professors. As one impressed undergrad explains, “UMW professors go the extra mile to help students and ensure that they succeed and students never hesitate to take time out of their day to go see their professors during their office hours for extra help.” Another amazed undergrad rushes to add, “Every professor I have had has made attempts to learn every student’s name and what they are interested in.” And in general, undergrads at UMW seem to find their professors “wonderful” and “very engaging.” It’s quite evident that “they love what they teach and want you to love it as well.” What more could you want from your classroom experience?

Student Body

Undergrads at University of Mary Washington tend to be “very relaxed and easygoing.” And while they don’t necessarily “party too hard,” rest assured that they “definitely know how to have fun.” Students also report that “Mary Washington is unique because everyone is so friendly.” Indeed, “you cannot make it between buildings without someone saying hi or smiling at you. Everyone is so kind and welcoming.” This grateful undergrad agrees sharing, “I’m never afraid to speak to someone new because at Mary Washington my peers are always accepting and willing to speak and form new friendships.” Of course, it’s important to mention that while “there is some diversity in demographics,” the “student body is predominantly white.” However, undergrads also rush to point out that the school has a nice combination of “on-campus and commuter students as well as a mix of traditional and non-traditional students. [In turn,] working with such a mix gives students a very unique education because you can learn so much from your [peers’] various viewpoints and…experiences.” All in all, University of Mary Washington undergrads “care about each other, help each other and respect each other.” Or, as this student succinctly states, “[This] community feels like a second family.”

Campus Life

University of Mary Washington’s campus is frequently abuzz with activity. To begin with, when the weather is nice you can find “students chilling on lawn chairs or reading on the grass or playing Frisbee.” Additionally, “almost all students participate in clubs.” And many UMW undergrads are “involved in community service both on and around campus.” Moreover, “every weekend there are $1 movie nights for students, and one of the biggest weekly events is bingo on Tuesday nights.” Although “there is no Greek Life officially on campus…there are nationally recognized fraternities and sororities operating off campus.” And we’ve been informed that “parties are most often hosted by either these groups or by athletic teams.” Students also declare “Fredericksburg is a great place to live.” After all, “there are a plethora of historic sites to visit and an abundance of eateries to enjoy” along with “shops, movie theatres, and a bowling alley.” And should these undergrads desire to get a little further away, they can easily capitalize on the fact that the university is “smack-dab in the middle of Richmond and Washington, D.C.”
