Sustainability
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is the region’s premier urban research university and believes that the “onus for untangling the complex relationships between humans and their environment and inventing the next generation of appropriate technology rests, at least in part, with us—the research community.” UNC Charlotte’s researchers are set on accelerating that change. Their Urban Institute has been a regional resource on sustainable development, and the new Institute for Social Sustainability (INSS) helps raise the dialogue on social issues to levels common for environmental and economic sustainability. The Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC) and the Sustainably Integrated Building & Sites Center bring together corporations, government agencies, students, and the university to conduct research into improved energy and water use, air quality, and productivity. UNC Charlotte has committed to building all future building projects to LEED design standards and recycling construction materials. The school’s waste management initiatives are models for the region, including a student-led initiative for zero-waste operations since the 2013 opening of the new football stadium. Green cleaning products and equipment include non-butyl wax stripper, water-efficient cleaning equipment, vacuums with HEPA filters, “coreless” toilet paper, recycled paper towels, and trash can liners made from reprocessed resins. In addition, dining services has partnered with local producers to reduce the use of antibiotics in meat, source sustainable seafood, and serve fair trade coffee. Like its sister campus UNC Greensboro, UNC Charlotte has also implemented “trayless” dining and a reusable mug program in an effort to cut down on paper, food, and water waste. Remaining waste is put to good use through the University’s composting program, which turns an average of 640 pounds per day in food scraps into compost.
