In 1910, West Texas State Normal College opened its doors to a handful of students and today, West Texas A&M University celebrates record enrollment numbers, award-winning academic programs, top-notch professors, state-of-the-art facilities and Lone Star Conference championships. It's been recognized as one of the best colleges in the American west in the "Best in the West" section of The Princeton Review's website feature "Best Colleges: Region by Region" and in the coveted top tier of the Best Regional Public Universities-West category in the U.S. News and World Report's annual rankings of America's Best Colleges.
WTAMU is a student-driven University that offers the ultimate college experience through a perfect balance of liberal arts and career-oriented programs. That, combined with various campus activities and numerous community involvement opportunities, more than prepares WTAMU students for future success. It’s a place where students come to connect, explore, learn and lead.
WTAMU, backed by its 100-year history of educational excellence, continues to grow and reflect an energy for the future. The historic campus offers a modern appeal with more than $95 million in capital improvements during the past 10 years. Those improvements include the Buffalo Sports Park, a Student Success Center and three new residence halls as well as the renovated Engineering and Computer Science Building, Palo Duro Research Facility and Jack B. Kelley Student Center. The University also is keeping pace with today's technology with a campus infrastructure that enables next-generation teaching and learning.
In addition to its main campus in Canyon, the University also is home to the Amarillo Center. The facility opened in 2008 and occupies the 7th, 10th and 11th floors of the Chase Tower in downtown Amarillo to offer select upper-level and graduate classes in courses ranging from accounting to social work. WTAMU also includes an 80-acre Horse Center and the 2,310-acre Nance Ranch.
