Financial Aid
Graduate Assistantships & Fellowships
Students interested in graduate assistantships or fellowships should apply through the department by contacting the graduate director. To qualify for a graduate assistantship, a student must be fully admitted in a graduate program and enrolled in nine credit hours on-campus or in off-campus state-supported courses.
Graduate Academic and Creative Research Grants
The Graduate School awards Graduate Academic and Creative Research Grants to assist with funding of a research or creative activity project to be conducted on an annual basis. For a list of research and creative scholarship opportunities visit www.usd.edu/graduate-school/graduate-research.
Student Loans
- Federal Loans
To qualify for federal sources of financial aid, graduate students must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). USD's priority deadline for filing the FAFSA is April 1.
- Private Loans
Graduate students who need additional funds after carefully considering the feasibility of federal loan. Applications for alternative loans are available through the Office of Financial Aid. Students are strongly encouraged to research the lender benefits, customer service and other information related to loan processing, services and cost.
GI Bill/VA Educational Assistance
As one of the top ranked "Military Friendly" schools by G.I. Jobs and "Best for Vets" colleges by Military Times, the University of South Dakota has a dedicated veteran's resource center on campus. Military/Veteran students who plan to use federal VA Educational Assistance such as the GI Bill should apply for those benefits through the USD Office of Veterans' Services.

Warm and Welcoming
Residents, students and visitors to Vermillion have enjoyed the city's warm and welcoming charm for more than 150 years. Today, about 10,000 adventurers, farmers, manufacturers, professionals and scholars call Vermillion their home.
Easily Accessible
Downtown restaurants, movie theaters, cafés and specialty shops are all within walking distance of the campus. But if you're up for a road trip, you can make Sioux Falls, South Dakota or Sioux City, Iowa in less than an hour, Omaha, Nebraska in about two and Minneapolis, Minnesota in five.

Campus Facilities and Equipment
The DakotaDome
One of the region's most recognizable structures, the DakotaDome serves as the cornerstone of the Coyote Athletic Department. The DakotaDome is a multi-purpose facility that is home to five intercollegiate sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, track and field and swimming and diving.
Sanford Coyote Sports Center and Lillibridge Track Complex
The complex houses a Science, Health and Research Lab building to accommodate kinesiology and sport sciences, occupational therapy, physical therapy and physician assistant studies. It includes a 6,000 seat arena for basketball and volleyball and nine-lane, NCAA certified outdoor track and soccer complex with two soccer fields.
Muenster University Center (MUC)
The new student center was completed in 2014, the MUC offers 30,000 square feet of additional dining space, and retail franchises Chick-Fil-A, Qdoba and Einstein Bros. It also offers an expanded 1,200 seat capacity for social gatherings and meeting spaces.
National Music Museum
The National Music Museum is one of the great institutions of its kind in the world. Its renowned collections include more than 14,500 instruments from virtually all historical periods.
Oscar Howe Gallery
The Oscar Howe Collection holds the largest collection of work by internationally celebrated American Indian artist Oscar Howe who served on the USD faculty for 25 years.
