Academics

New Jersey Institute of Technology is a public research institute renowned for providing an excellent and affordable education in Math, Science, and Engineering with “great programs that prepare you for the real world.” Students appreciate the great career prospects combined with competitive in-state tuition and financial aid. Most professors “have a deep passion for what they teach” and are generally “willing to help, even outside the classroom.” While there are plenty of “engaging, interesting . . . [faculty who] promote discussion,” undergrads find that a few others are “not able to communicate effectively enough for [students] to completely understand.” But while professors may be “hit or miss” in the classroom, they really shine in connecting students with essential research opportunities and jobs. “Everyone in my peer group has [done] or is doing research,” one student tells us. Makerspace, an interdisciplinary prototyping and collaboration facility on campus, “is a great place to invent.” Academics are rigorous, but one student says, “We tend to help each other when it comes to challenging tasks.” Another concurs: “Math is much easier to understand when it’s taught by a … peer.”

The ambitious student body values the school’s career development services and industry connections. Students in the prestigious Engineering school find that their degree “means something to employers who are recruiting for jobs,” especially within New Jersey. Another asset is the popular Cooperative Education Program which enables students to gain paid professional work experience in their field before graduating. Simply put, “NJIT is a great value [that] provides solid curricula, opportunities, and degrees.”

Student Body

Students describe their peers at NJIT as “friendly,” “smart,” “motivated,” and “nerdy”—a term of endearment used to represent a shared passion for tech and science. More specifically, about 70 percent of the undergrad population is male, and students would like to see a more balanced gender ratio. Additionally, one student notes that NJIT lacks the “well-rounded [student body] one is more likely to find at a liberal arts school” and would benefit from attracting more Humanities majors. But that’s not to say the student body is homogenous—NJIT is quite diverse with students “from all races, religions, and walks of life.” The university attracts “hard working students dedicated to achieving their personal, academic, and professional goals,” yet the campus community handles the competitive environment in a supportive way. One student confides, “No matter how stressed I am, I always know that I can go back to [my classmates] whenever I am in need of assistance.” Another offers this reflection: “Everyone tries to help each other … succeed in the best way they can.”

Campus Life

As one NJIT Highlander states, “Students here are very driven,” so naturally coursework, internships, and research take up much of the day. “Most [students] are at the campus center studying, hanging out with other friends, or learning at the tutoring center,” another adds. Studies aside, students enjoy the food options on and around campus. They also spend time at the school’s game room and Highlander Pub. Additionally, the close proximity to New York City makes “experiencing new things and … obtaining internships” an easy feat. NJIT is predominately a commuter school, and many students do “tend to fill their days commuting,” but “this does not stop students from getting heavily involved on campus and building relationships that last a lifetime.”
