At Becker College, a private institution founded in 1784 in the second largest city in New England, undergrads truly feel that their school is dedicated to “helping students achieve their dreams.” Students say that the college prides itself on providing a “personal education,” one that helps you “push yourself to do your best.” And it offers a “small, close-knit community” where everybody can get to know their peers. Academically, Becker allows students the opportunity to pursue a number of great disciplines. Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t highlight the “outstanding” nursing program and the “very well established and highly successful pre-veterinary program.” In addition, the college has “one of the best game design programs in the country.” Inside the classroom, undergrads love that so many of their courses involve “one-on-one interaction and class discussions.” There’s no fear of languishing through boring lectures here! And, certainly, that can be attributed to “great” professors who go out of their way to “include real life examples” in their teaching. Perhaps even more essential, the instructors at Becker “are all very nice and genuinely care about their students’ success.” An animal care major shares that “all of my professors are very thorough and answer all my questions and concerns. They are easy to meet up with outside of classes.” And a fellow animal care student summarizes her classroom experience by stating, “The professors dedicate a lot of their time to make sure that we are studying and working to the best of our abilities.”

Student Body

Becker undergrads tend to think very highly of their peers. And they assure us that anyone who chooses to attend can “make friends very quickly.” This can certainly be attributed to the fact that “almost everyone is easy to talk to” as well as “easygoing.” Even shy students can find their place here. The trick is simply to get involved. As one veterinarian science major explains, “Students fit in very well through sports teams and other activities and clubs outside the classroom.” Despite having the adjective “nerd” bandied about, we’re told that “the campus holds a diverse student body with many different interests.” And, if “you play sports, video games, or share a love for animals, you’ll fit in.” Lastly, a nursing student shares, “what we all have in common is our dedication to our studies and our school. We all work hard in class.”

Campus Life

Becker maintains “a 50/50 split between commuters and residents.” However, it’s certainly possible to seek out some fun on the weekends. Given Becker’s amazing game design and esports program—including a varsity team—it’s no surprise that “everybody plays video games here.” Beyond simply cozying up with an X-Box, undergrads can also be found playing “Magic: The Gathering,” and some ingenious students have even “made their own card games.” Even if you’re not a gamer, you’ll still be able to find activities. Many undergrads tend to congregate by “the pool tables in the student center.” There are 14 Division III varsity sports and many activities, including plenty of clubs like the music club, Black Student Union, Ultimate Frisbee, and dance team. And Becker even “sponsors trips every weekend.” Semester at Sea and College for Social Innovation Semester in the City programs are available. There is a moderate amount of alcohol consumption, but it doesn’t seem to dominate campus life. A nursing student explains, “There are parties off campus, and I do enjoy going to them, but a lot of people choose not to drink.” Finally, students enjoy taking advantage of the city of Worcester’s many shopping and dining options.
