We anticipate receiving 8,000 applications for only 1,200 spaces in the fall freshman class. When reviewing applications we consider each student's academic grades and curriculum, with special attention given to honors, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or dual-enrollment courses. We also look for students who demonstrate leadership ability, a commitment to service and community involvement, exemplary talents, and diverse experiences. As part of the application review, CNU requires a personal statement or essay of no fewer than 250 words to learn more about you, your goals and ideas.

Any high school senior planning to apply is strongly encouraged to interview at Christopher Newport. This personal interaction is an important part of the application process. It is a great way to enhance your admission application and receive a personalized introduction to CNU. All freshmen are placed into a Learning Community based on their academic interests, which facilitates a successful transition from high school to college. Living together, sharing multiple classes with a small group of students and collaborating with faculty enable learning beyond the classroom while providing extra support.
President's Leadership Program
Make an impact through the President's Leadership Program (PLP). Selected freshman applicants have excelled in their academic studies and have demonstrated a passion for engagement. Through challenging courses, public service, foreign study and other targeted opportunities, PLP empowers leadership students to become caring, knowledgeable and effective leaders for America and the world. The President's Leadership Program offers priority registration, annual scholarships and study abroad awards.
Honors Program
This unique program offers students more freedom to customize their academic experience for their personal and professional aspirations. The Honors Program allows more time for interdisciplinary seminar-style courses and challenges students by means of study abroad, independent research, internships, jobs and volunteer experience relevant to their passions. Each student receives an annual residential scholarship (including a study abroad stipend), as well as priority housing in an Honors Learning Community and priority course registration.
Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity
CNU undergraduates engage in cutting-edge research and creative activities. In all fields of study, students collaborate with faculty mentors on key research, make conference presentations, and publish books and scholarly journal articles with faculty. Each spring the Paideia conference showcases outstanding student research, and the Summer Scholars Program offers paid research assistantships.

Undergrads at Christopher Newport have “great ... pride” in their peers, and it’s easy to understand why. For starters, they continually prove themselves to be “kind” and “welcoming.” As one student elaborates, “We will hold doors open for others, and we will smile and say hello.” A fellow undergrad adds, “It isn’t uncommon for someone you don’t know on campus to acknowledge you and ask how you’re doing that day.” Therefore, it’s not too surprising to learn that students here also tend to be “community and service driven.” They’re an “ambitious and inquisitive” bunch, and many seem to “possess an inherent [desire] to follow their passions.” The one aspect a few students lament is the seeming “lack of diversity.” We’re told that “the majority of the students here come from wealthy families from the same region of northern Virginia, around the Washington D.C. area.” Thankfully, we’ve been assured that CNU students are “very accepting of those who are different.” And they’re all united in their “goal to be successful and graduate with a degree.” Most importantly, you can “expect everyone to treat one another with respect.” We’ll give this content undergrad the last word: “My peers are like my second family, and it is so easy to call this campus home.”

Located in Southeastern Virginia, Christopher Newport is in the heart of one of the most historic — and beautiful — areas of the United States, convenient to Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Chesapeake Bay and Virginia Beach. Three airports are close by and so is an Amtrak station. The university is nestled in a suburban area and a short walk to the James River, hiking trails, and history and art museums.
Campus Facilities & Equipment
Matching Christopher Newport's strong academic reputation is the beauty of campus – a place where students learn in classrooms and labs equipped with the latest technology, and play out their dreams on the stages of the Ferguson Center for the Arts. It was designed by the firm of acclaimed architect I.M. Pei. Since its opening in 2005, more than two million people have attended performances by world-renowned entertainers. An adjoining fine arts center is under construction.
The Paul and Rosemary Trible Library provides an unbeatable atmosphere for research, learning and scholarly interaction. Einstein's Café on the ground floor is a hub of campus activity.
Christopher Newport has nationally acclaimed athletic facilities and is opening a new lacrosse and field hockey stadium that will serve the class of 2020. Nearly 4,000 students live in award-winning residence halls and apartment suites with all the amenities and comforts of home. Every residential room has high-speed internet, satellite cable TV and electronic room access. All rooms are equipped with a microwave and mini-refrigerator or have kitchen access. Residents of on-campus apartments have their own bathroom and an in-unit washer and dryer.
Off-Campus Opportunities
Christopher Newport students participate in internships in Newport News, Norfolk and nearby communities, home to NASA, Langley Air Force Base, Canon, Sentara Health Care and numerous other nonprofit, government and private sector employers. Christopher Newport undergrads are a fairly active bunch. Students say that “the gym is often crowded,” and “intramural sports fill up quickly.” Additionally, when the weather is nice, a handful of students can often be found playing “Frisbee, soccer, or flag football on the Great Lawn.” Of course, there’s plenty to do beyond athletics. After all, “many student clubs and organizations put on fun events throughout the week and even on weekends.” For example, “The Campus Activities Board will [frequently host] movie nights [and] on Thursdays there is a trivia night.” A lot of students also enjoy attending all of the “plays, concerts [and] speakers [offered through] the Ferguson Center for the Arts.” A “majority of students are [involved] in Greek life,” but don’t assume that that denotes a prominent drinking culture. On the contrary, the CNU campus itself is “dry.” Therefore, “on the weekends, a lot of students go [to] off-campus… parties.” And speaking of off-campus, undergrads have easy “access to multiple beaches along the mouth of the James River.” They also love heading out to “Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach” all of which are only “a very short drive away.”
