Academics
At Randolph-Macon College, “everyone from the professors, to the other students, to the staff, … care about each student.” Those lucky enough to attend have the privilege of “creating the education experience [they] want.” As one student explains, “If you want to be an athlete, a triple major, and study abroad three times, you can do that!” A hallmark of a Randolph-Macon education? Small class sizes. As one undergrad notes, “The student-faculty ratio is roughly 11:1, and last year there were barely any classes over 30.” That makes it rather easy to “get to know professors and … build relationships with them.” Of course, it doesn’t hurt that professors at RMC “genuinely care about your success.” As one student concludes, “They are willing to help me in any topic. I am not just a number in a lecture hall, and they know my name. My questions in class have never been dismissed for the sake of proceeding with new material. I am very lucky to be where I am.”
Student Body
Undergrads at Randolph-Macon admit that their school isn’t the most diverse institution, making claims that they are a “predominantly white” student body with a mostly “middle-class status” that also tends to skew conservative. However, one undergrad insists that while many wouldn’t “view Randolph-Macon as diverse, … that is something they are working to broaden.” But regardless of background, nearly everyone describes their peers as “very welcoming and kind.” Another student underscores this point by sharing, “We are a tight community that works to support each other no matter if you are an athlete, a member of theater, or a part of any other organization on campus.” A classmate agrees adding, “I never leave my dorm without seeing someone I know, and I can always find a friendly face in a crowd.” Additionally, students report that most people are “extremely involved” and “genuinely care about the school and community.” As another satisfied undergrad sums up, “I have met some of the best people here, and have definitely found lifelong friends.”
Campus Life
Academics certainly take priority at Randolph-Macon, and many students report that “Sunday through Wednesday most people can be found in the library.” Nevertheless, they just as quickly assert that “Thursday through Saturday are for getting together and letting loose,” and say there are “so many options” from which to choose when you want to kick back. For starters, “athletic events … are very popular.” In fact, these undergrads—whether they’re part of the team or not— are so dedicated to their sports teams that “students will carpool to support their friends” in off-campus games. In case you think all these undergrads care about is athletics, know that “Greek life philanthropy events are widely supported too.” Of course, students here don’t just rely on school organized activities—they also make their own fun, which ranges from “random dance parties and movie nights” to days when they just “hang with … friends, take walks together, and bake.”
