Academics

Set atop 300 grassy acres in the small town of Crete, Nebraska, Doane College is an independent liberal arts school characterized by its “warm learning environment” and strong teacher-student relationships. With excellent programs in fine and performing arts, journalism, and education, among other fields, students say Doane academics are “very well-rounded and rigorous,” overseen by “outstanding professors” and a responsive, student-oriented staff. More than anything else, students praise the incredible “personal relationships” they build with Doane faculty. Here, “Professors care about the successes of students, both in and outside of the classroom.” The school also encourages involvement in the greater community and teaches students to have “an impact on the world around us through leadership, service and education.” As “one of the most well known private schools in Nebraska,” Doane College “very highly respected in the state.” That reputation, combined with Doane’s emphasis on “educating students to their full potential to ready them for a competitive world,” pays off for graduates: 98 percent of students are continuing their studies or starting a career within six months of graduation.

Student Body

With fewer than 300 students in each incoming class, every person plays an important role of the Doane community. Drawing largely from the surrounding state, “The typical student is from Nebraska, middle to upper-middle class, and very involved” in campus life. Out-of-staters and international students make up about 16 percent of the student body, but overall, students admit that they “aren’t demographically diverse.” At the same time, Doane recruits “students with all kinds of strengths and interests,” so “Students of all types are able to find their niche.” No matter where they come from, students say there is “an incredible community feel” on campus, and “because the school is so small, students of all backgrounds interact and become friends with people they may not have even met at a larger school.”

Campus Life

Students come to Doane for more than just its academic programs, citing the “unique community” and “friendly atmosphere” as the school’s greatest strengths. Well-rounded and outgoing, “A typical student is involved in several extracurricular activities and leads an active social life.” In particular, many are involved with Greek organizations “community service projects both on campus and in the community,” or collegiate and intramural athletics; the school’s “athletic facilities are great.” When they have some downtime, Doane students might “hang out with friends in the coffee shop or go over to other dorm rooms to socialize.” Though “there isn’t much to do in Crete,” the state capital of “Lincoln is just 20 minutes away,” and there are “movie theatres, shopping malls, and restaurants” near campus, as well as “outdoor recreation areas.” Doane’s “alcohol policy has recently changed,” resulting in fewer campus shindigs. Nonetheless, “There is a lot of partying, especially in Greek groups and specific halls.” For mellower entertainment, “sober activities are also very popular,” including events put on by the school’s Student Activities Council. If none of those options strike your fancy, “It’s a matter of being creative!”
