Academics

John Carroll is "a Jesuit Catholic" university with a "good reputation" "conveniently located about twenty minutes away from the city of Cleveland" where you can "great education and also become a well rounded person." "Not to mention the campus is beautiful." John Carroll promotes "social justice for all" and "the importance of service, while giving you the tools to become a competent leader." "The student to teacher ratio is roughly about 14 to 1," and professors are "extremely nice, approachable, and very intelligent." Classroom conversations are windows to real-world situations," says one student. However, others suggest the school could be "more academically challenging," and while "some professors put their hearts and souls into their jobs taking an interested in all aspects of their students, others do not." John Carroll "follows in the Jesuit philosophy of being men and women for others." "The focus on service, social justice, education, and faith allows me to grow in each of these areas," says one English student. "There is an extremely active campus life that is centered on service." One happy business student sums up the John Carroll experience: "I know for a fact that I will walk away without any regret of choosing this school for the fine opportunities and connections that I will gain from being a student at John Carroll University."

Student Body

Although "John Carroll is becoming slightly more diverse in relation to race and minority status," the school could still "improve by expanding the diversity." Although some say "everyone is respectful to everyone," others claim that "discrimination is a problem" and that "students outside of [the dominant] groups struggle to fit in" "A typical student is a white, middle-class, moderate Republican ranging to radical right wing [and] hard drinking." "The student body is 90 percent white," and "most students have somewhat of a Catholic background, but overall, everyone is very nice and friendly. " The standard preppy style pervades campus, with most students "conforming" by sporting "Ugg boots, NorthFace, and Longchamp bags." Students here are "inclined toward service," and most students "fit in by joining clubs or playing sports." Most of the students are "well-off or affluent," but students insist that there are plenty of students from different economic backgrounds, and "economic status isn't really a subject of conversation."

Campus Life

Life at John Carroll is a step up from any private Catholic or Christian school, especially because it is "not as strict." This means that "if you're looking to party, you can typically find one." "There are two types of students here: either they study or they party. They either fit in by drinking, or they fit in by befriending people that don't drink." "There is a strong Greek Life presence at JCU," but not much "school spirit." However, the school also throws "alcohol alternative events," and students enjoy going to "nearby attractions for fun." "You can go see a show at the Q Arena, go to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, any of the many Cleveland Museums, the Cleveland Zoo, the Flats, shopping at Legacy Village or Beachwood Mall," and much more.
