Academics

“Small classes” help to ensure that “you are not just another number in a lecture hall.” Indeed, the college “really wants to help its students realize their full potential.” Many tout the “strong academics” and highlight the education, biology, and religion departments in particular. Classes are often “discussion-based” and “require a conscientious student who will actively participate in discussion.” Moreover, undergrads here speak effusively about their professors. As one Biology major shares, “Regardless of which class you’re in, you can tell that each professor’s #1 priority is that the students succeed.” A history major succinctly adds, “Whether you like it or not, your professor will know your name,” while a Media Studies major notes that their “professors aren’t just professors. They’re lifelong teachers,” with a Business Administration major stating, “I’ve had professors set up weekend study sessions before exams, bring in donuts for 8:00 a.m. classes, and invite students over for dinner or out for coffee. My professors have also really helped me in beginning my career—setting up research studies in my field of interest, writing incredible letters of recommendation for grad school, or networking to get me internships.” It’s been said that St. Mike’s “could improve the Media Studies, Journalism, and Digital Arts Facility,” and that “there are not enough seats in popular or required classes for the amount of students that need to take them.”

Student Body

In their own words: “the typical student is upper-middle class, environmentally and politically aware, and always says ‘Hi,’” and who quickly dons “North Faces and UGGs during the cold Vermont winters,” and, although St. Mike’s is a Catholic school, students “are all different in regards to religions, races, sexual orientations and genders.” The most frequent comment made by first-years “is that they were shocked when a student held the door open for them.” Giving back to the community is a main theme in terms of the typical student here at St. Mike’s, as exemplified by the statement that “nearly all students participate in at least one service project during their four years here. Most students are concerned about the environment and social justice.” Students are “very relaxed for the most part” and enjoy “the outdoors that this great state provides for us.” “If you’re genuine and true to who you are, you’re bound to do well at St. Mike’s.”

Campus Life

Burlington Vermont (less than ten minutes from campus minutes by bus) is “one of the greatest places to be in this part of the country. There is so much to do in such a small, convenient area.” Of Burlington, students say that “Church Street is crowded with unique shops, fantastic restaurants, and interesting people.” Many also love to take advantage of Vermont’s outdoor recreational options and the school counts many avid skiers, snowboarders, and hikers among it ranks. In fact, “Saint Michael’s provides amazing ski pass deals and transportation to amazing ski resorts in the area.” St. Mike’s campus is “tiny, but in the cold months of winter, five minute walks to class are a godsend.” Life at St. Mike’s is “pretty chill.” “If a student is one that likes to party, they are able to find it on campus. If a person is more reserved, there are thousands of other things that that person can do.” “St. Mike’s students have their heads on straight when it comes to making decisions.” Students feel that the food “lacks flavor,” although it should be noted that this is the way of most undergraduate dining experiences.
